MUGA

About MUGA

MUGA is a small, slowly growing anthology of verse in quiet English renderings, drawn from the smaller literatures of Europe: the Basque, the Romanian, the Hungarian, the Baltic tongues, the Caucasian, the Iberian, the Finnic. We publish one poet at a time, one short poem at a time, whenever the editors find something that survives the crossing.

Muga is the Basque word for border, for boundary stone. The project sits there on purpose: between languages, between centuries, between the poem and its echo. A rendering, we like to say, is a letter that arrives wet — something has always leaked out, something has always been gained.

The original poems are all in the public domain, and the fragments quoted in the original languages are offered as points of reference; the renderings are our own. Refreshing the front page serves a random poem, as is only proper for a borderland. Corrections, suggestions and arguments are welcome at editor@kurru.duckdns.org.
