At the Well

She set the bucket on the stone
and looked at me as at the rain —
a thing that comes, a thing that goes,
a thing that wets the same field twice.
The well held one long star
for every girl who leaned above it;
I leaned, lost my own reflection,
and walked home carrying the bucket.
